Life and Death in the Ferns

Here is a photo my dad took, today, of some kind of insect eating a Japanese Beetle. What type of critter might this be?

My uncle thinks this is a Lynx Spider, but I think it is an insect, not an arachnid.

(I heard from the North Museum)
Alan,
It's not a spider. It is an Assasin Bug. Very common
and not picky about who they eat. Japanese beetles
have plenty of natural predators. Birds and skunks
love the grubs.

My Uncle Merle added this comment:
"Presumably, you got my messages about the picture of a supposed lynx spider, or at least this the impression I got from the picture your dad sent. I told him it does have eight legs, two of which are in the front. You may or may not agree with my impression. Of course one can not be certain that this impression is correct without direct access to the specimen."
