(I heard from the North Museum) Alan, It's not a spider. It is an Assasin Bug. Very common and not picky about who they eat. Japanese beetles have plenty of natural predators. Birds and skunks love the grubs. Alison
My Uncle Merle added this comment: "Presumably,you got my messages about the picture of a supposed lynx spider, or at least this the impression I got from the picture your dad sent. I told him it does have eight legs, two of which are in the front.You may or may not agree with my impression. Of course one can not be certain that this impression is correct without direct access to the specimen."

My uncle thinks this is a Lynx Spider, but I think it is an insect, not an arachnid.
