Apr 26, 2009

We took the cover off the pool today, and the water really wasn't all that bad. I've been shocking it like crazy. There are a couple of cups of dead earthworms in there, but no overwhelming algae or dead animals.

We ran in the Race Against Racism in Lancaster in the morning today, and I took this video as I crossed the line and had my timing chip removed. I promise no more shaky cams after this video. This is the last one. Even I find them irritating to watch!

I saw this manhole cover Downtown.

Grainy Hospital Photos

We went to visit Rhoda in the Hospital tonight. She will be home in the next day or two, I would bet. I'm still learning how to take photos with my camera in low light. These are NOT good examples, but I wanted to include them due to the subject matter.

Tons of Random Photos

Here are tons of Random Easter photos that I didn't take time to organize.

Photos while running

This was a foggy morning last week.

This answers the age old question "Why didn't the mallard get across the road?" More of my road kill collection here.

Popular Culture

I see Paul and Joel are posting links to videos, so here's mine: Susan Boyle on the British talent search show. Sorry, I'm not very creative; it was one of the most popular videos on the internet last week.

Running with Jody

In the course of about one month, Jody took up running. He can already throw down some incredible mileage. On Saturday we did my 8.5 mile "Three Towns" run. In this video we are in the 7th mile, cruising towards home on the old train tracks beside Ivy Drive.

It was raining during the first few miles, and then again at the end.

This video won't win any awards, but at least it's short!

We registered for the Philly marathon in November.

Bike Photo

Isaac's is a minority sponsor of a local Bike racing team (The team is named for its primary sponsor, "Allied Milk".)

The racers keep us up-to date with blog posts and emails. This photo came in from last weekend. Despite this awesome face-plant, our rider, Chris, finished 7th.

Can you see the Isaac's logo on his Jersey?

Isaac's Bag Hunger Soup Fund

I am inviting any of my Blog readers to participate in Isaac’s "Bag Hunger Soup Fund" during the month of April. We are committed to raising at least $50,000 for Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, helping them meet the growing demand for food caused by the current economic crisis.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) is sort of like the "United Way" of food. They are a central spot for food collection and redistribution. They are able to take each $1 donated and turn it in to $15 worth of food, which goes to local food pantries and soup kitchens throughout our area. The food pantry at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Landisville, which my Rotary Club supports by serving the Thursday evening meal 4 times each year, is a member organization of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank.

This is a multi-pronged Fund Drive. Isaac’s will be donating $1 for every soup item sold in April. In addition, we are inviting our employees and customers to donate, and our employees are organizing competitions, by store, to see who can raise the most money through soup sales and pledges they are collecting from family and friends.

I would be very grateful if you could join our efforts by making a donation. No amount is too small! Please make your check payable to CPFB – Isaac’s Bag Hunger Fund, and mail to:

Isaac’s Restaurant & Deli
354 N. Prince Street, Ste. 220
Lancaster, PA 17603

Or, if you would prefer to make a donation on Line, you can use this link at the CPFB web site. (Drop me a note if you choose this method -- I am ALSO part of our employee contest!)

Thank you very much for your consideration.

Puerto Rico Weekend

Sharon and I and Ed and Andrea had a weekend in Puerto Rico. Sharon and Andrea were at a derecho (law) conference.

We stayed in the Coqui Inn in Isla Verde, San Juan. Our "budget inn" was one step up from a youth hostel, and across a busy highway from the beach and bus stop, which we crossed on a pedestrian bridge. Some of the guests were a little noisy at night, but the place had lots of character, and the actual local neighborhood was very quaint.

I caught on to some simple Puerto Rican Spanish! Here are some sentences I learned, with authentic PR accent! They drop the ending "S" and basically smoosh everything together.

"Good Morning" -- "Bwe Di"
"Thank You" -- "Grasia"
Preamble to any statement -- "Mira... !"
Alternate preamble to any statement -- "No no no, Mira... !"
A multipurpose statement used frequently, to mean almost anything -- "Mira mira mira!"

We had fun. I enjoyed el Viejo San Juan (Old San Juan) very much.

We spent one evening with Steve Latimer, a lawyer from New Jersey who was a participant in the conference.

Here are about 150 photos. At 5 seconds per photo, looking at this album will be 12 1/2 minutes of your life that you'll never get back.

I was practicing the in-camera panorama feature of of my Olympus, and some didn't stitch very well. I left them in because they showed what I want. Just squint your eyes and pretend the stitching is seamless.
